Have you ever wanted to try something different, to jazz things up, maybe someone you know really enjoys and has had great  results with an alternative technique, but you don’t know what it involves and would like to know more before trying it out.

Here we try to give you an idea of what a number of alternative techniques for exercise, healing, etc are about and what to expect.  It is suggested that you seek out professionals to help you integrate the various techniques into your life.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is the most holistic system of mind/body fitness and has been around for many thousands of years.  It aims to unite your physical, mental and spiritual health.

However, to enjoy the benefits of deep relaxation, coupled with the physical strength and suppleness that yoga affords you, does not mean you have to become deeply involved with the yogic philosophy.  You can take up yoga at any age or level or fitness and the postures (asanas) can be adapted for any weaknesses or injuries.

Yoga not only stretches all parts of the body, but also massages the internal organs and glands.  It helps reverse the stiffening-up of the body and counteracts tiredness, ageing and incorrect posture.

What is Pilates?

Pilates (pronounced pih-lah-teez) is a form of body conditioning that centres mainly on the core muscles.

Named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates, the system was devised in the early 20th Century to coordinate mind, body and spirit.

Pilates uses very little equipment and that which it uses is easily and readily available.

What is Reflexology?

In reflexology pressure is applied to the feet and hands using thumb, finger and hand techniques without using oils, creams or lotions.  The pressure points reflect different areas on and in the body.

It dates back to ancient Greece, China and Egypt and was brought to the west in the 20th century under the title Zone Therapy.

It is used to help treat a number of different problems and is particularly good for treating stress, by relaxation.  Many medical doctors and health care professionals now recognise the therapeutic benefits of reflexology and it is sometimes recommended as a supplement to medical care.

It is recommended that you seek out a trained reflexologist, as the benefits will be greater.  A typical session usually last an hour at a time and most people prefer to go on a regular basis over a period of time.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique that promotes healing, stress reduction and relaxation. Administered by “laying on hands” it is based on the idea that an unforeseen life force energy flows through us and when the force is low, we are more likely to get sick or feel stressed.

The energy is channeled to the patient to encourage the body to heal itself.

What is Meditation?

Meditation quiets the mind and the body, allowing the creative side of the brain to take control. Meditation can be concentrating on a mantra, an object or upon your breath.  There are many different forms and ways to meditate including mindfulness. Some research is required to find the practice that best suits you.

To gain the most benefits practice regularly. It can be practiced anywhere even on a crowded train or out for a walk. You can lie down, sit or walk and the more you practice the easier it becomes to still the mind.

What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is an ancient healing art developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago, using the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension, and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force energy (Qi) to promote health and healing. Using the same points as Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupressure applies a comfortable range of pressure from gentle to firm. Acupressure is well integrated with other bodywork and energy work therapies, therapeutic touch, somatic work, healing imagery, energy psychology, and massage therapy. Acupressure is safe, non-toxic, and definitely habit forming…

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving fine needles that are inserted into specific points of the body,  and either left in place or manipulated.

This form of medicine is used to treat ailments such as headaches, stress and pain. Each treatment lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.

What is Massage?

Massage therapy uses long smooth strokes, kneading and other movements using oil and lotions to manipulate superficial layers of muscle, bringing oxygen and nutrients to body tissues.

A typical massage session lasts between 40 to 90 minutes. A medical history, symptoms and lifestyle will be taken during the first session.  You will then be asked to remove your clothing and the therapist will leave the room while you do so.

The therapist will then return, but only when you are ready. In North America the areas not being massaged are under sheet at all times

Be careful when you finally get up as you may feel a little dizzy at first.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a natural, non-invasive treatment system using aromatic plant extracts to balance, harmonize and promote a healthy body, mind and spirit. It is both preventative and an active treatment to assist the body’s natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself.

It is important to use natural not artificial extracts.

Aromatherapy can be used in your home, bath, car etc. If you are planning on using aromatherapy in an office it is best to check that no one has a problem with scents.

Some oils can be extremely powerful so care must be taken when using.  Seek advice and research the oil you wish to use to make sure you understand the various restrictions and uses.
